STARTS -Class 1/14/23 Cool Water

 Ran 4 1-turn starts at different ages.  Cold, sunny, and windy.  40 degree.   Track1- (2 hrs 10 minutes) start was good --paralleling the woods.  I feel like I am reading better.  I could recognize scent loss at turn.  He did NOT want to turn left into the woods.  I had to hold him and back up.  My theory is that he does not like the woods because he gets pricked in the face / eyes with brush / thorns.  He does NOT see well.  The cataracts is bad in left eye.  Is this why he didn't want to turn left?  Good article indication in woods. Used 10-ft lead.


Track#2  (3hrs 20 minutes) Much more wind.  I think he started in wrong direction.  Judi says I need to recognize tracking behavior and not wait for tracklayer to tell me to stop.  And don't go with him when his head is up.  I can't  stop thinking of the TD Test (right here at Cool Water) from 2 years ago when we did NOT pass because I would NOT go with Tricks when he had his head up.   He tried to pull me in that direction 3 times. . .but with his head up.  I said no,  because he had his head up.  So he finally picked another direction and we got blown off.   Looking back, it was a windy day (like today) and I should have just trusted him.    I felt like I needed a longer line today.  10 feet wasn't enough for him to figure things out.  (It was blind to me).  Had trouble with the right turn(into the wind),  got some help to continue.  Good article indication.

Track#3  (3 hours 30 minutes).  Great start.  I am watching his spine and only going with him when it is straight!  Beautiful left turn towards the woods and good article indication.  Of course Judi did not see this one!    No videos today.


Track#4  (3 hrs 35 minutes)  Good start.  Had a little trouble on right turn OFF the woods.  Then on track.  Stopped for only some food.  Passed the last article. (eye glasses bag w/ food)

I need to work on DOUBLE LINE UPS!!!  Work in more places. . .even if only 1 short leg.

 Man, this impressed ME!  He was so ON it!  Sorry the videos are a bit shaky. . .We were moving!  He was pulling nice through tall, clumpy grass.  I really had to be careful of my footing. He ate very little food along the way, even at the start.  Somewhere along the way I tried to adjust the camera view and accidently stopped and restarted it.    So there are 2 videos. He PICKED up the article at the end!  I used a glove and stuffed his toy into the glove with treats and secured it closed w/ rubberband.  No self-rewarding!      Question:  When do I start using a START article?  And HOW?  Do I ask him to pick it up or DOWN on it?  Or just sniff it and go?    Part I           Part II

Buster Snow Day. 1/7/25 TWO in a ROW!! + article practice 1/8/25

 Another straight line in the snow with Scent Pads. 90 paces total.  NO articles.   He was excited to go out!  Two weeks ago, he was running the other direction when he saw me put on my tracking books!  Now he is whining to go!  Progress! He did another GREAT track today!  I was so happy and so was Buster!  Put my gloves on this time.  Gave him some love at the start. . .he wants to hug me.  Excitement?  Frustration?  Anticipation?  Nervous?  I am learning to deal with his personality more and more.   He pulled well, but not like a bull moose from yesterday.  Much more maneagable and steady.  Ate/stopped  at almost every Scent Pad! Had a short moment of checking out something, but came right back to track.  Enjoyed his BALL at the end! Buster Snow Day.
