Stair step Dec. 11

Tricks ran  a nice stair step today.  Age: 2H 52 minutes.  590 paces.  5 right turns.  4 articles total. S10, W15. F 8/9.  43 degrees cloudy.  Ground mostly dry.  Short grass with some longer grass in stretches.

Kept pretty close to track.  Keeping head down more and more.  I really think he is learning how to track! Still missing many food drops. Now starting to back track for missed food drops.

Turns . . .nearly every turn, he indicated loss of track with head up/ not pulling forward/ and circling LEFT --very intensely sniffing ground.  I am recognizing this as lost track/"search mode".  Then he starts right but doesn't quite commit all the way.  Rechecks the left and then goes right finally.  Does this mean he is not confident?  Am I holding too hard at turns?  Should I ease up even more?  I think he only took 1 turn straigt in once.

Article indication was excellent.  He stopped clearly at all articles and I waited 5 seconds to verbally praise him.

I used the Mantrailing App..  Cool how it give you deviation measurement :  12.24 feet was how far off the track Tricks was in total.  I guess that's ok?  Blue line is track layer.  Red line is dog.  Checkered flag is the END.

Questions:  Do I let him back track for missed food drops?  How much do I let him back track on turns? https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1N9-Jxj5iDEGwFNUs1IRB8j2swpmhygOnhttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1G2BD_StsnxsrbXfmUduImBfdADYvJWhA

  1. Nice work! Don’t worry about the circle left first…that may just be his style. As long as he comes back and finds the right turn, it’s fine.

  2. Oops…sure, he can backtrack for missed food drops for now. Eventually the route to more food will be shorter if he goes forward…. Often their nose is ahead of their brain, so they are past the food before they realize it’s there. Fine for him to go back
